2 Husketeers

Nika and Kira, two huskies from Madison, Wisconsin have become social media icons, with over 150,000 followers on their page @2husketeers! Their social media presence has turned these two huskies into serious forces to be reckoned with.

What do Nika and Kira mean to you?

They are my family! Nika and Kira are always doing goofy, crazy things to make us laugh and help us remember that life is too short to stress about the small stuff.

What made you decide to bring two huskies into your family?

My husband and I both grew up with dogs and we knew we’d want to adopt dogs at some stage in our lives. We like to go for daily runs, hiking, and other outdoor activities so we needed a breed that could keep up with our busy, super active lifestyle.

Huskies are stunning dogs but are also very stubborn and hard to train. But they are good in the cold and we knew that they could adapt to our Wisconsin weather, so we settled on the idea of adopting Huskies.

We first brought Nika into our home as an 8-week-old puppy!  She was and still is a little ball of sass with lots of huskittude.

Around two years and lots of training later, we decided to get her a Husky friend, which is how we came to find Kira.

They are now 8 and 6 years old and we couldn’t image our lives without them!

Within the last two years we also started fostering and volunteering for our local rescue, Fetch WI Rescue, and ended up adopting our sixth foster Hoya, a 1-year-old Korean Jindo. After a couple of weeks in our home, it was like he had lived with us his whole life.

We continue to foster for Fetch WI Rescue but don’t plan on keeping anymore dogs, or as we like to call it, foster fails. Three is the perfect number for us!

How do you create content for their social media?

I always joke that my creativity comes from wine…I mean who doesn’t love wine! But honestly, it comes from Nika and Kira. They’ll do something goofy or get into trouble or beg for treats and I’ll grab my camera. However, they also know what the camera is and will stop doing what they are doing once it comes out sometimes. Darn that huskittude!  I seem to never be able to get a video of them howling as they shut up as soon as they see the camera.

Sometimes spontaneity or special events inspire content for our page. For example, Halloween was coming up and I was sitting on the couch watching Hocus Pocus (with some wine) and the three dogs were laying on the floor in front of me. So I thought, wait, they could be the Sanderson sisters.

Why did you decide to start a social media account for them?

I actually won a mirrorless camera through a social media contest back in February 2016. I was excited about the idea of taking better photos, and Nika and Kira were usually my test subjects.  Since my family and friends were getting sick of all the dog photos on my own feed I decided to start a personalised Instagram account for them.

What opportunities has this created?

We’ve met so many people on and offline. It’s great talking to like minded individuals who love dogs as much as I do. We’ve also gotten to promote products, and build relationships with companies who love hearing our input about the products we receive. We also give extra products we receive to Fetch WI Rescue to use for their fosters or as raffle items to raise money for their dogs. It’s so nice to give back to the community and our account is all about spreading positivity and having fun.

Where to from here?

We’ll keep doing what we are doing… living life, staying positive, and having fun! Life’s too short to not live a little Husky!
